Great PS3 Console……but Backwards problem 5
Playstation works fine, great graphics, sound, easy play…

the only problem it doesn’t have backwards compatibility, so you can’t play ps2 or ps1 cd games, which right now are more abundant and cheaper (this is the reason why the 40gb ps3 is less expensive than the other ones ps3)

If i have know, may be i would have look for the one with bacwards compatibility, like the PS3 60GB

PS3 40GB 5
This system rocks! I have 10 games now and cannot get enough. COD4 is very realistic and quite disturbing, MOTORSTORM looks awesome and is alot of fun, ASSASINS CREED has very nice graphics along with a good storyline. I’m playing those games the most. Spiderman 3 on Bluray looks outstanding and the free remote (after MIR) that came with the system makes it feel like a dedicated player. Black finish gives the console a high end look. The power and eject buttons are unique in that you only have to rub your finger across them. Kinda hard to explain but you will know what I mean when you get one.

I was concerned that the system would run hot but that is not the case. Don’t care for the high priced controllers that don’t rumble. They could throw in an HDMI cable too. Still don’t know why I need over 40GB of disk space but I suppose I’ll find out. Haven’t touched a PS2 game since I got the unit so lack of BC is not as much a problem as I originally thought.

Excellent Blu-Ray Player and Media Center 4
I’ve owned this console about 3 months now. I’ve been primarily using it as a Blu-Ray disc player and media center. I do own a few games for the system, just because I’m curious to see how it stacks up against the competition with regards to online play and other features.

Pluses:

1) It’s upgradeable; you can change out the hard drive, add USB peripherals to the system, firmware upgrades to allow newer features/Blu-Ray capabilities.

2) It’s more open: You can actually load Linux on this thing, it seems Sony lets you the owner do some more tinkering than the other console vendors would like you to do. (Granted it’s not complete access to the console, but definitely ahead of the competition).

3) Movie Playback: The Blu-Ray picture quality is excellent with the latest firmware upgrade. The DVD up-conversion this player does is also much better than the other models I own.

4) Media Center: Connects flawlessly with my PC running Windows Media Sharing, plays DivX videos, MP3’s, AAC files, WMA. The other plus is that you can copy the media from your PC direct to the PS3 HDD, so if you don’t need your PC on all the time.

5) Free online multiplayer: This has pluses and minuses, but it does save you $50 a year

Minuses:

1) Online features: Vastly outgunned versus the Xbox 360. It is obvious that Xbox Live is a much more mature service in terms of how it integrates system wide versus the PS3. This would be global friends list, invitations to play a game when your playing another…

2) Voice chat: You cannot mute voice chat at all in the current firmware revision (2.17 as of this writing). I assume this is a feature coming down the pipe. It’s obnoxious when there is a 13 year old who you just want to mute. This can be done in the 360 with no problem.

3) Game selection: Not very many platform exclusives at this point, I’m sure there will be more down the road. Right now, no incentive for me to buy the PS3 version of the game versus the 360.

Now that Blu-Ray has won the format war, if you own an HDTV, this would be the best buy you could do for yourself. May not be the best at gaming (yet), but definitely a great addition for your home theater setup.

I’m glad I went with Sony 5
Was planning for over a year to eventually get an Xbox360, but after the mind boggling amount of complaints about that system I grew very cautios. I finally had the money to go out and buy a new game system. A few months prior I would have gotten the Xbox360, but I read just one too many bad reviews about how they keep breaking down and the ring of death, etc… so I decided to go with Sony. I know Sony is lacking in games right now, but I feel in the coming years they will more than catch up with Xbox360. The Playstation 3 is NICE AND QUIET, that’s another thing I really like about it. I’ve had it for a few months and no problems what so ever so far.

Optical failure in less than three months! 3
We bought this unit in December, 2007 right before Christmas. I use it mainly as a Blu-Ray player and my son uses it as a gaming machine when he’s home from college. It’s been an excellent Blu-Ray player, free from bugs and DVDs launch very quickly. That is, until two nights ago. My son was playing COD4 and the audio began to cut out, the screen froze up and everything came to a halt. We tried several DVDs but it will no longer recognize any type of disc. Followed all troubleshooting instructions, reset the machine settings twice, no dice. Called Sony and they are sending me a box so I can ship it back and exchange for a new one. The service rep said they have been getting calls about this type of failure. The build date was October, 2007. I had heard that these machines were reliable but failure in less than three months is unacceptable. At least their customer service appears to be on top of things. We’ll see how the replacement unit works out.
